Drink more water! In a recent study the National Institute of Health examined the serum sodium levels in 11,000 people over a period of 30 years, The serum sodium level increases when we drink fewer fluids. (A normal level is between 135 to 146 milliequivalents per liter). Those at the high end of the range had a 10% to 15% higher chance of being biologically older than their chronological age compared to those on the lower end of the spectrum. They also had a 64% higher risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart failure, stroke, diabetes and dementia. “The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging and prolong a disease-free life,” said Natalia Dmitrieva, Ph.D., a study author and researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH.  

So how much water do we need? We know that we lose our water through our breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For our body to function properly we need to replenish its water supply simply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. (About 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks). Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Your body depends on water to survive.

Hydration also plays a significant role in aging because it can affect the health and appearance of the skin.
