Want To Slow Down the Aging Process?
Category:Drink more water! In a recent study the National Institute of Health examined the serum sodium levels in 11,000 people over a period of 30 years, The serum sodium level increases when we drink fewer fluids. (A normal level is between 135 to 146 milliequivalents per liter). Those at the high end of the range had a 10% to 15% higher chance of being biologically older than their chronological age compared to those on the lower end of the spectrum. They also had a 64% higher risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart failure, stroke, diabetes and dementia. “The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging and prolong a disease-free life,” said Natalia Dmitrieva, Ph.D., a study author and researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH.
So how much water do we need? We know that we lose our water through our breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For our body to function properly we need to replenish its water supply simply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. (About 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks). Water is your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Your body depends on water to survive.
Hydration also plays a significant role in aging because it can affect the health and appearance of the skin. Proper hydration can help to keep the skin looking plump and moisturized, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dehydration, on the other hand, can cause the skin to look dry and dull, and can make wrinkles more prominent. It is important to drink enough water and other fluids to stay hydrated, especially as we age, because our bodies are less able to conserve water as we get older. Additionally, using products that help to moisturize the skin, such as lotions and creams, can also help to keep the skin hydrated and reduce the visible signs of aging. I love this particular line of skin care products that promote hydration of the skin. I also recommend these body care products, a nutrient-rich, vitamin infused, three-step routine which supports healthy, hydrated, and firmer-looking skin.
Maintaining proper hydration is important for good health. When you are well-hydrated, your body is better able to perform its normal functions, including regulating your temperature, removing waste products, and transporting nutrients. Dehydration can have a number of negative effects on your body, including fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and dry mouth. In severe cases, dehydration can lead to more serious health problems such as heat stroke and kidney stones. It is generally recommended to drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water per day, though the exact amount of water you need can vary depending on your age, sex, weight, and level of physical activity. It is also important to drink enough fluids when you are sick, especially if you have a fever or are vomiting.
I have found for myself a great reminder to drink more water each day ~ I use a water pitcher with a revolutionary new water filtration pitcher system certified to reduce up to 99% of lead—as well as dozens of other nasty contaminants that can turn up in your water and may be harmful to your health. Just having it on kitchen counter reminds me to pour another glass of great filtered water and help me stay hydrated.
